The Metaverse is a network of 3D worlds, built using virtual reality. It is often described as a new and improved iteration of the Internet. The Metaverse creates one easily accessible online universe entered using an augmented reality headset. This may sound futuristic or fictional, but virtual reality is very real and is developing at a fast pace. With a virtual reality headset, you can play games or watch videos as if they were happening around you, but what else can be done with the Metaverse?

In fact, the term metaverse came from the 1992 science-fiction novel Snow Crash which prophesied a 3D world ruled by avatars. Three decades on and (minus the post-apocalytic dystopia) we’re not far off.
The idea is that we can create an ‘Avatar’ character, and move around a virtual world where we can purchase items with cryptocurrency. We could also go to concerts, go to school or work, and do all of this without even leaving the house.
Playing video games will reach new heights as we move around as a ‘person’ in this virtual world… and do all of these things ourselves in a world that is just zeros and ones.
VR can be developed to the point where we could go on a date with someone over the internet, actually meet and talk to them, and yet, never meet them in person. But – we would have met their online character.
So many things can be done with the Metaverse, but much of it is still only science fiction. Many people think that VR or the Metaverse, is going to become the future of the world. That we will meet people, go to school, and work, through virtual reality and the Metaverse. Many people wonder if the world as we know it is going to change drastically.
Imagine walking past a restaurant wearing your VR sunglasses – the menu, reviews and relevant discussions with your friends all pop up. Pretty cool right?
Why Is The Metaverse So Important
It is said that the Metaverse could possibly be “the next internet”.
Many companies are working on developing even more technology to begin creating a “Spatial Internet“. They hope to create an entire society out of VR, where we could do everyday things, but in a virtual space.
VR may already be in use when it comes to the workplace. As an alternative to Zoom, VR is being used to attend work meetings. Even Facebook has come out with its own version called Oculus. These are great developments for office workers who might not want to commute.
Since we are already in an age of technology, we are all enveloped in the difficult world of social media. Many of us already have a hard time having in-person conversations.
If we were all to start using VR all the time, we could begin to become even more socially deprived and have an even harder time meeting people in person.

Many people believe that The Metaverse is the future of social media, as well as the future of education in schools.
By using VR, the social media industry could make a lot of money using immersive videos. They could use “physical” shopping centers to replace ads, or even video chats that make it seem like the person is really there. Many of these could replace even more of our physical interactions with the world.
When it comes to the Metaverse in education, there are a lot of positives. If studying to become a nurse, assisting in a virtual surgery could prepare you for the actual surgery. Seeing all the procedure that need to be followed, and where the surgical site is could help the person perform surgery a lot better than by just watching a video.
Say a person is studying to be an architect. When in the Metaverse, they could be in Rome or Paris seeing and studying the beautiful structures, without having to even leave the classroom.
Some say that the Metaverse is the future of video games, but there is a lot of controversy about this. Some say that it will give gamers a more complex set up and an immersive experience of what is in front of them. Gamers could build whatever they want or play as a soldier, moving around as if they were that person.
Others say that it will not be the future of gaming (at least for now), because it’s just too soon. People still want to play on PCs because the games are similar and still have better graphics than VR. There’s certainly a long way to go before VR graphics catch up to those of a simple console/monitor.
